Description

Handspun Hope is a Fair Trade organization dear to our hearts! Not only is the yarn gorgeous in texture and its natural hues draw you in, but more importantly Handspun Hope employs and empowers women in Ethiopia and Rwanda with employment and a living wage.

The women of Handspun Hope naturally produce Organic Merino DK from sheep to skein! They care for the sheep and spin, and dye the wool, using local natural Rwandan dyes and sustainable practices. We know you'll want to cast on something ASAP with this versatile yarn!

A Note On Color:

Because of the natural dying process and how natural dyes can vary, we recommend purchasing all your skeins at one time (and an extra skein if you're nervous about running out). We always do our best to handpick skeins for the closest match. It is a good practice with hand dyed yarns to alternate skeins of the same colorway to blend the colors as much as possible.

Care

Hand wash, dry flat in the shade. Do not iron.

FREE Yarn Winding

Many of our yarns are sold in hanks rather than balls and need to be wound into a "cake" before using. If you'd like us to do this for you, please add the Ball Winding Service to your order of yarn! (Please note: wound yarn can not be returned.)

From Handspun Hope

The wool from our own flock of Merino sheep is triple-washed before the ladies of Handspun Hope begin creating yarn using the age-old craft of spinning with only wheels and hand tools. This yarn is hand-dyed in a bath created from a local salvia plant.

This project gives over 120 women, most of them widows and orphaned survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi, dignified employment. Handspun Hope is a certified member of the Fair Trade Federation, which guarantees fair wages and working conditions for the artisans.

Please note, due to the characteristic of natural fibers, actual color may vary between skeins. We recommend alternating skeins during knitting.

"I'm so excited to finally find my perfect local yarn store. They carry such an amazing range of yarns, from locally sourced to small batch sheep to skein to naturally dyed. I've been twice (so far!) and I'm always greeted so nicely. It doesn't feel clique-y or snobby as some shops do. Their range is really amazing and so far I've gotten sweater yarn and yarn for 2 different shawls here. Dawn is great with color advice too. Highly reccomend!" - Google Review
"I couldn't leave this shop a high enough score. 10000/10. The instant I walked in, I was given a warm greeting and was immediately helped. I went in for sock yarn but, was overwhelmed by all the amazing local yarn. I love that they have a direct relationship with their yarn artisans. She even stayed a few minutes past closing when I was having problems picking just one skein. Never felt rushed or like she wanted me gone. She took the time to make sure I was getting exactly the righ.t product and even put my skein into a cake That's an amazing service that I've never been offered before. I can't say enough good things about this place. Ill definitely be making the trip there more often!" - Google Review
